Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star
*****
“Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star” seemed like a bomb waiting to explode.
It starred David Spade, who until this wasn’t funny unless he was on Saturday
Night Live. But here he’s funny – and so is the movie, which is brightened
up by child star appearances from TV shows like “The Brady Bunch” and “My
Three Sons.”
Spade stars as Dickie Roberts, a child star that starred on a famous sitcom
until it was cancelled – and then he became a total mess. Being a valet parker
isn’t much fun, so he decides to get his career started again by asking Rob
Reiner if he can star in his new movie. Reiner explains that Dickie needs to
have a childhood – something he never had – in order to be a real adult and
be right for this particular role.
Dickie decides to hire a family to treat him like a child for one month,
and hilarious circumstances abound. While not really anything to yell Oscar
about, the movie is funny enough to pass.
