Truthfully, I have no idea what fans of the original “Dukes of Hazzard” TV show will think of the new film version; I have never watched a single episode in my life. So from an outsider’s point of view, I’d say that most mainstream audiences are going to enjoy it.

However, “The Dukes of Hazzard” is being sold as a comedy. And although I was smiling and enjoying myself throughout most of the film, it’s the sort of movie where most of the laughs are in the trailer, but the trailer isn’t really that funny anyway. I don’t want to undersell it, but I would qualify “The Dukes of Hazzard” as more of an action-comedy than a non-stop laugh-fest.

Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott are Luke and Bo Duke, the famous cousins who get their thrills by cruising around the Southern town of Hazzard in their vehicle, The General Lee, which is usually followed by a trail of police cars. After the two outlaws is Boss Hogg (Burt Reynolds), the head honcho of Hazzard, who has a scheme to destroy the town. Jessica Simpson plays their scantly-clad cousin, Daisy Duke. Truthfully, there’s not much to be said of Simpson’s performance; she’s really not in the film that much.

Overall, the movie fails in comparison to other summer comedies such as “Wedding Crashers” and the upcoming “The 40-Year Old Virgin,” but Knoxville and Scott have a sort of natural screen bond that works well.
