I, Robot

Starring Will Smith, James Cromwell, Bridget Moynahan

Rated PG-13

Okay, I’ll admit, “I, Robot” is not as great as “Minority Report,” but as summer entertainment, it’s on a pretty high level. Will Smith, back to kick the tush of something, is perfect in this sci-fi thriller that has some thoughts to go along with it’s special effects. The film is based on a novel by Isaac Asimov, one of the brilliant pioneers of science fiction like Phillip K. Dick.

Smith is Del Spooner, a Chicago detective in the future who has a strong prejudice against robots. He might be wrong; everyone else trusts them. But after the modern designer of robots, Dr. Alfred Lansing (James Cromwell) has an apparent suicide, Smith feels that maybe the robots had something to do with it.

That’s enough plot for you to munch on now; once the movie gets into Spooner’s investigation, it’s actually quite interesting. Director Alex Proyas made a masterpiece with “Dark City,” one of the best sc-fi movies ever, and although this doesn’t exactly live up to that, it’s a well-made thriller in a summer of rip-offs.
