Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events

Rated PG-13

Starring Jim Carrey, Meryl Streep, Jude Law

****

“Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” is a delightful film that is based off of the best-selling children’s books by Daniel Handler. While the movie is moody and a bit haunting (think “The Nightmare Before Christmas”), I felt enchanted to see such a wild display of acting and glorious use of production design.

Jude Law is the voice of Lemony Snicket, a writer who is chronicling the lives of the Baudelaire children. The children have just learned that their parents died in a fire that burned down their entire house, and so they must begin living with their beloved Count Olaf (Jim Carrey), who turns out to be anything but beloved (in fact, the only reason he takes the children is for their large inheritance.)

After ‘a series of unfortunate events,’ the Baudelaire children start living with other relatives, including Aunt Josephine (Meryl Streep.) But Count Olaf is always a step ahead of the children, getting rid of each new relative with whom the Baudelaire children reside.

“Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” is especially dark for a children’s movie, and maybe that’s why I loved the film so much. With “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” 2004 has been a great year for creepy kids films, and “Lemony Snicket” certainly has it all: adventure, wild and crazy performances, and even a humorous cameo by Dustin Hoffman.
