Millions

Rated PG

Starring Alex Etel, Lewis McGibbon, James Nesbitt

“Millions” is the fantastic new family film from Danny Boyle, a director who usually stays away from bright subjects and focuses on the darkest (his previous movies include “28 Days Later” and “Trainspotting.”) “Millions” is a real exception, although Boyle still uses his offbeat camera techniques and strange music to incorporate this as an independent film.

Alex Etel is wonderful as Damian, a little boy in England who has almost encyclopedic knowledge of every Catholic saint to be found (many of whom visit Damian throughout the film.) He and his brother, Anthony (Lewis McGibbon), live with their father (James Nesbitt) following the death of their mother. One day, while playing outside, Damian finds a duffel bag full of money that flew out of a passing train.

Damian shows the bundle of cash to Anthony, and they both marvel in the hundreds of thousands of pounds that they have found. Damian believes the money is from God, and therefore should be given to help the homeless and the poor. Anthony, however, is more interested in buying expensive electronics that the family could previously not afford. What neither of the boys have realized, however, is that the money is stolen, and its criminal owner will do anything to get it back.

“Millions” is heartfelt and heartwarming, and although the film may look a bit strange, overall it has a magical effect.
