The Phantom of the Opera

A Stage Musical Directed by Harold Prince

Starring Gary Mauer, Rebecca Pitcher

Playing at the Bass Concert Hall

The Following is Jack Kyser’s Review of the play “The Phantom of the Opera,” which played at Austin’s Bass Concert Hall in February 2004.

I had the wonderful chance to attend the opening night at the Bass Concert Hall of “Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera,” the new stage musical that is part of “Broadway in Austin.” It plays from now until Sunday, February 28th, 2004, and stars Gary Mauer as the hideous Phantom that haunts an opera – the timeless musical now comes to Austin!

The beautiful songs in the musical include “Think of Me,” performed by Carlotta (Kim Stengel), Christine (Rebecca Pitcher), and Raoul (Tim Martin Gleason), and, of course, the glorious “The Music of the Night,” sung by the lonely phantom himself.

The beautiful sets and voices take me back to the Broadway shows I saw with my dad and mom in New York City, like “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “The King and I,” as well as shows I saw in London such as “Blood Brothers,” “Smokey Joe’s Café,” and, again, “The Lion King.” There is much talent behind this production of “The Phantom of the Opera,” and I advise any theater fan to attend it as soon as possible.
