Robots

With the voices of Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry, Robin Williams, Greg Kinnear, Paul Giamatti, Mel Brooks

Rated PG

“Robots” is the new animated film from 20th Century Fox, the studio that also brought you “Ice Age.” The movie is fun for children and adults, with superb voice work by everyone from Halle Berry to Jay Leno.

Ewan McGregor is the voice of Rodney Copperbottom, a young robot who lives in a world made up of only robots. He is an accomplished inventor, even though no one, except for his parents (Stanley Tucci and Dianne Wiest), acknowledges that fact. Soon, Rodney moves to Robot City to make his parents proud; his father, after all, is a simple dishwasher. In Robot City, apparently a famous man named Bigweld (Mel Brooks) can make an inventor’s dream come true.

But right away, things are tough, especially considering that Bigweld’s company has been temporarily taken over by the evil Ratchet (Greg Kinnear), who plans to give upgrades to every robot and dispose of the ‘junk’ robots.

However, Rodney finds friends in the manic Fender (Robin Williams), a Bigweld company employee named Cappy (Berry), and Piper (Amanda Bynes.) Together, they try to make Robot City what it once was: a land of opportunity.

Williams, being the silly improviser that he is, steals the show just as he did in “Aladdin,” and other voices include Jim Broadbent, Drew Carey, Jennifer Coolidge, Jamie Kennedy and Paul Giamatti. “Robots” is truly a great animated film.
